Tom Durkin - Multimedia Writer/Editor
In a world of glitzy websites, slick marketing literature, and self-important white
papers, one essential fact remains:
content rules. A sharper image gets your
clients' and customers' attention, but it's the
content that actually sells your
products, services, and ideas.

Here at
Words4Work, I specialize in professional writing and editorial services
for business, government, high-tech industry - and anything else that requires
excellence in words.

If a picture is worth more than a thousand words (and it frequently is), a
portfolio is certainly worth more than a thousand-word
resume. Therefore,
here's my portfolio:

How to Survive a Recession - Xilinx Inc. CEO Wim Roelandts is one of the
most admired and visionary CEOs in Silicon Valley. I ghost-wrote this column
for Wim, which articulates his philosophy of corporate success strategies.

    CTA v. Gould 1 - The multi-year, multimillion-dollar lawsuit the California
Teachers Association filed against the state of California was the most
contentious and complicated lawsuit in California education history. This
article from the California Education Funding Alert analyzes the incredibly
complex litigation over the equally complex legislative funding mechanisms.

CTA v. Gould 2 - Even as a biweekly newsletter, we were among the first to
report the settlement of CTA v. Gould - and the only one to report the ultimate
settlement was not $376 million but $1.76 billion.

Making Telecenters Work - During my eclectic career I've been fortunate to
work with editors who encouraged me to take risks - and then not edit what I
wrote. Gil Gordon of Gil Gordon Associates is one of these brave souls.
Although my assignment was dead serious (analyzing the status and future
of telecenters in the US) and my research was rock solid, my approach in
this Telecommuting Review article was slightly ... irreverent. Not all white
    papers have to be boring.

Commuting Is an Unsafe Working Condition - Take one "crackpot" idea and
mix with one human tragedy - and you get some compelling food for thought:
How is technology changing employers' workers' compensation liability? This
provocative story was also published in Gil Gordon's Telecommuting Review.

Paying Off a Bad Check - As a journalist, I've found it wise to keep my
opinions to myself. Nevertheless, sometimes you just have to take a stand.
This op-ed is one of those times.

There are plenty more writing samples I could post, but technical and copyright
restrictions prevent presenting them online. Therefore, I offer my
resume to
further document the breadth and depth of my writing/editing services.

I am available for assignment, contract or hire. Rates and terms are negotiated
(and negotiable) on an individual basis, but an upfront deposit is always required.
Please contact me if you would like to discuss what we can do together to meet
your editorial needs.

GO TO RESUME

                                                                                                6/13/08
SETI - As the former managing editor of Xcell
Journal for Xilinx Inc, I mostly edited technical
articles on programmable logic and digital signal
processing applications. Occasionally, however, I
needed to point out that Xilinx is a serious player in
"big science" - everything from Fermilab's search
for the last subatomic particle, the Higgs boson, to
the search for extraterrestrial intelligence.
Renaissance 2.1 - This concept page for Robot &
Science Technology
magazine (of which I was news
and features editor), expands on
Wired magazine's
prescient observation that the invention of the
Internet/Web is truly the Second Renaissance --
and my own belief that evolution is not over.
A Handbook for Peer Counselors - One of the most useful
things I've ever done in my life was to teach teenagers
how to be peer counselors at Colfax High School in
California. They didn't have any sort of training manual ...
so I wrote one.

Some people strengthen society just by being the kind of
people they are.
- John W. Gardner
Don't Try This at Home Unless You're a
Professional - One of the privileges of building
and running David Fleming's F
leming LTD
Telework Consulting website was getting to
write the first guest commentary.
Shameless Self-Promotion - The advertising/PR
agency durkin/gibbs & associates no longer exists, but
my commitment to creativity, reliability and excellence
endures.
